Maintaining Crisis Momentum

My article as originally published in American Thinker:

Rahm Emanual once said: “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.” But what happens when the Democratic Party is desperate for a diversion and is currently without any real crisis to exploit? Is it then time to manufacture one — or two?

The birth control questions in the Republican debates left many scratching their heads as to why this issue was suddenly brought up, but it really started to make sense once the Sandra Fluke story broke loose following her birth control show-testimony on February 23. This turned out to clearly be about creating a “crisis” where no crises previously existed.

Rush Limbaugh made some inappropriate comments that the media used to build enormous momentum on this manufactured story, while terrible statements by others on the Left were ignored. But that momentum started to die off as people seemed to catch on to what was truly going on.

Three days after Sandra Flukes testimony, Trayvon Martin, an African American male, was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic male, in a tragic case where all of the facts are yet to be uncovered. For around two weeks this was just another one of the many tragic cases that we here about every day, but suddenly this one gained tremendous momentum as a racial “crisis” in the media and like the Sandra Fluke story, received mention directly from President Obama. Rush Limbaugh noted this curious phenomenon on his show today.

I don’t know if it’s a coincidence but if you look at the Google Trends search volume for the time period of these cases it looks as though the Trayvon Martin case, which happened just three days after the Fluke testimony, didn’t really start to gain traction until the Fluke/Limbaugh story had started to die off. This chart shows the search results over the last thirty days for the terms Sandra Fluke, Rush Limbaugh and Trayvon Martin charted side by side.

Did the Trayvon Martin tragedy spontaneously gain momentum among an outraged public or was this a coordinated effort on the part of the Democrat/media spin machine to keep attention away from a failed Presidency? I don’t know but this seems like more than just a fluke to me.
